Understanding the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHB)
FEHB is an employer-sponsored health insurance program that covers federal employees, retirees, former employees, and their families including children under age 26.
FEHB offers a wide variety of healthcare plans ranging from Fee-for-Service, Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Consumer-Driven, and High Deductible Plans. The cost of the plan is based on which plan you select. The employing agency pays about 70% of the premium and the employer pays the remaining portion in addition to any bill received for services rendered not covered by the insurance.
When is an Employee Eligible to Enroll in FEHB?
There are three times when an employee can enroll in FEHB”
- During the first 60 days as a newly eligible
- During the Federal Benefits Open Season (mid-November to mid-December)
- During a qualifying life event such as marriage, divorce, or birth
