Social Security Retirement Benefits
Social Security is one of the three sources of retirement income included in the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). The other two are the pension plan and the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP).
Who is Eligible to Receive Social Security Benefits?
- Employees employed under FERS
- Employees who worked under the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) prior to 1984 but then switched to FERS when it became available
- You can receive Social Security benefits based on your earnings record if you are age 62 or older, or disabled or blind and have enough work credits
- Those who worked under CSRS and stayed in CSRS after FERS became available are not covered by Social Security
